The Uferhallen are a major venue for the production and presentation of art and culture in Berlin, comprising art studios, dance and rehearsal spaces, sound studios, a concert hall, exhibition hall, workshops, restaurants, and versatile event spaces. Over 150 cultural practitioners live and work at the complex, which attracts several hundred visitors daily, making it a central hub for cultural dialogue and an integral part of Berlin’s cultural scene and urban life. Despite years of struggle to safeguard the Uferhallen’s existence, this vibrant site remains at risk due to the ongoing processes of displacement and gentrification that are affecting both the neighborhood and the entire city. After renewed protests and negotiations between the Berlin Senate and the owners, a solution is emerging to preserve this cultural location, although its future remains uncertain.

Building on n.b.k.’s longstanding commitment to uphold the Uferhallen and marking a highlight of Berlin Art Week, n.b.k. and Uferhallen e. V. together with curators Isabelle Meiffert and Vincent Schier are orchestrating an extensive exhibition and event program, which will take place across this former industrial site, encompassing both its outdoor areas and inside halls and studios.

A screening program featuring works from the n.b.k. Video-Forum explores themes of labor, commodification, and migration. Meanwhile, site-specific installations at the entrance gates and inside the large hall set the stage for the overall project, titled Frequently Asked Questions. Curated by Isabelle Meiffert and Vincent Schier, the performances and interventions look at coexistence from local and global perspectives, examining uncertainties and liminal states that affect human and non-human communities now and in the future. Acute challenges, such as the sell-out of the city are addressed, along with the influence of changing climatic conditions on how humans coexist on a global scale.

An exhibition organized for Uferhallen e.V. by Elena Alonso Fernández and Mona Pourebrahim takes up the project title to deal specifically with the Uferhallen’s future. Their exhibition focuses on the current state of negotiations between the owners of the complex and the Berlin Senate and brings together the many voices of its resident artists.

Thematic tours of the Uferhallen and the surrounding neighborhood round out the program. During the weekend of September 16 and 17, a neighborhood festival and a diverse lineup of daytime activities, such as music, discussions, and open studios, invite visitors to fully experience and engage with the site.
