"When opinion becomes and occasion for calculation"

Wilkinson Gallery is pleased to present Berlin based artist, Dierk Schmidt first UK solo show. Schmidt’s work probes the idea of how painting can take on a political function - how it can respond to and reflect upon contemporary political moments and recent history.
The show opens with “IBM : Sticks on Hollerith” 2006, a painting depicting Schmidt’s desk with various documents relating to his research into the involvement of Deutsche Hollerith Maschinen Gesellshaft (a German subsidiary of IBM) in its supply of Hollerith punch cards (an early recording system) to the National Socialist Party for ixhibitions include Kunstverien Salzburg, GAK, Bremen and Kunstverein Kassel. He has a forthcoming solo exhibition at Kunstraum der Universitat Luneburg in 2007. His work has been included in many international group shows, the most recent being “Excess”, Museum Z33 Hasselt/B, “Elysian Spheres of action”, Secession, Vienna, “Be what you want but stay where you are”, Witte de Witte, Rotterdam, and “Driving trips drawing as reportage”, Kunsthalle Dusseldorf.
