“Alex Katz paints from life, either directly from nature or in the presence of models. The recipient of that sensorial experience offered him by reality, his attention is focussed in the main on the translation of that multidimensional reality into a clearly two-dimensional image. It is not the accurate representation of reality that motivates him, however. Nor is it the contrast between the shadow and the light, the complexity of the forms and textures, nor even the interpretation of the intangible—the climatic conditions or the emotions—that catches his attention. Instead, it is the beauty of a line, the elegance of a form, the refinement of a shaft of light, the brilliance of an amalgam of colours that stir him. The beauty that he observes, but above all else, the beauty that he succeeds in capturing, in taming, in appropriating, in refining and in reproducing. In his own way.”
