"grounded"

September 10 - October 30, 2010

Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects is pleased to present new sculptures and drawings by Ruben Ochoa. Entitled “grounded”, the exhibition explores the delimitations that we experience in our every day environment, an investigation that has been crucial to Ochoa’s practice over the last years. While past sculptures and installations often focused on concrete walls, sidewalks and curbs, structures that separate and demarcate a multitude of realities, this new body of work strives to strip away it’s own predesigned meaning of delineating real and perceived boundaries. In these new works, galvanized fence posts and concrete footings morph into ambiguous shapes and silhouettes, playfully revolting against their purposeful function and congregating in delirious clusters and twisting configurations. Utterly ignoring the physicality of the materials that define them, they push the boundaries of what we expect of sculpture.

Ruben Ochoa graduated from the University of California, Irvine, with an MFA in 2003. His work has been recently featured in solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, CA; at the Charles H. Scott Gallery at Emily Carr University, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; and at SITE Santa Fe, Santa Fe, NM. Group exhibitions include the 2008 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; and exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; Miami Art Museum, Miami, Florida; Instituto Cervantes, Madrid, Spain; Haubrok Foundation, Berlin, Germany; The Center for Contemporary Arts, Tel Aviv, Israel; and the 2004 California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, CA, among others. He was also the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 2008.
Ochoa will present a new large-scale sculpture in the upcoming exhibition, “The Artist’s Museum: Los Angeles Artists 1980-2010”, at the Geffen Contemporary, MOCA, Los Angeles. He is the only artist from the US included in the Future Generation Art Prize Exhibition, Pinchuk Art Center, Kiev, Ukraine, and he will be included next year in “Lustwarande 2011-Blemishes” at the Fundament Foundation, Park De Oude Warande, Museum De Pont, Tillburg, The Netherlands.
