For Frieze London 2014, Stephen Friedman Gallery is delighted to present a carefully curated group of paintings by Argentinian artist Manuel Espinosa (1912-2006).
The four paintings, dated from 1969 to 1970, were an important turning point in the artist's lifelong experimentation with geometric form and the manipulation of colour to produce diverse optical and kinetic effects.

From his travels at the end of the 1960s Espinosa became influenced by European Op Art. He experimented with imposing order on the formal compositions by interchanging and superimposing squares and circles.

In a kaleidoscope of overlapping shades of colour, these paintings are also characterised by a rigorous system of order. In their clashing and complementary colour combinations, each painting shines with its own unique and luscious luminosity.

Through rhythmic fluctuations, Espinosa invests each painting with a dynamic energy and along the way generates an impression of depth and movement. By 1970, Espinosa's philosophy was fully formed and the work from this period cements his status as one of the leading figures in the Golden Age of Latin- American Geometric Abstraction.
