Beni Bischof’s third solo exhibition at Sommer & Kohl focuses to a large degree on painting. Among the inspiration for the new body of works on display were the cartoons of Gary Larson’s “The Far Side”, whose absurd yet realistic humour comes close to that of Beni Bischof. Also, scenes from Rambo films find their way onto the canvas. This series of paintings is provided with captions which can be read as mere jokes, but also as commentaries on the state of our current society.

Bischof closely observes his environment and digests the abundance of information that he is confronted with on a daily basis by processing it in his work. Characteristic is the whimsical, biting and occasionally very funny character of his oeuvre. Collages, sculptures, drawings, paintings and installations display a broad, irrepressible and untamed production process. Social norms and politics are regurgitated and their inconsistencies exposed by making creative use of language and using images to a disarming effect.

In the summer of 2014 Beni Bischof published “Psychobuch” with Edition Patrick Frey in Zürich. This extensive publication with 2000 illustrations over 640 pages provides as much an overview of Beni Bischof’s work to date as well as being an artists’ book in its own right.

Beni Bischof (*1976) lives and works in St. Gallen and Widnau. He has just been awarded the Manor Art Prize 2015 which includes a solo exhibition at Kunstmuseum St. Gallen from 14 February until 21 June 2015 and an accompanying publication. In 2014 Bischof took part in exhibition at Fotomuseum Winterthur, Helmhaus Zürich and at f/stop, the 6th festival for photography in Leipzig. In 2012 he had his first large-scale museum exhibition at Kunsthalle St. Gallen.
