Sommer Contemporary Art is happy to announce the opening of xxs, a group exhibition of Israeli and International artists. The exhibition will open on the official opening night of the exhibition season in Tel Aviv.
xxs is an exhibition dealing with small scale works in all medias. Nowadays one sees more and more art in large formats. Be it painting photography video or sculptures, the walls of galleries and museums are surrounded by monumental compositions, which distance the viewer from the work.
xxs seeks to reveal the power of small scale. A small work contains more than the eye can see, it has the power to send the viewer to larger set of contexts and interpretations. What precedes what - the subject or the format, and how do they influence each other? What happens to the viewer when he encounters a small work which demands a closer inspection and a more intimate look? What set of sensations does this kind of work stimulates? What is the impact of a sole tiny work which occupies a whole wall?
Most works were created especially for the exhibition, in a variety of Medias. They present different interpretations to the theme of small scale, and reveal new aspects in the artists' creation.
xxs was inspired by two exhibitions at the HVCCA (Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art), investigating the issue of scale in contemporary painting. The exhibition includes works by some of the most active young artists working in contemporary Art today: Laylah Ali, Anver Ben Gal, Verne Dawson, Yoav Efrati, Tim Gardner, Axel Geis, Guy Goldstein, Karl Haendel, Rachel Harrison, Thomas Helbig, Andreas Hofer, Yitzhak Livneh, Aim Deuelle Luski, Tal R, Zbigniew Rogalski, Ugo Rondinone, Tracey Snelling, Monika Sosnowska, Eliezer Sonenschein
