JORGE GALINDO – JULIAN SCHNABEL
13 September – 11 October, 2011

During the 2011-2012 season the gallery will be celebrating its 25th ANNIVERSARY. In honour of this event the gallery is presenting a special programme with a selection of some of the artists who have collaborated with the gallery over the years.

The opening of this programme will take place on September 13th with a joint exhibition of JORGE GALINDO and JULIAN SCHNABEL.

Following his last individual exhibitions in the Niemeyer Centre in Avilés, with his large-sized polaroids and his retrospective exhibition held in the Correr Museum, Venice, JULIAN SCHNABEL will be presenting his work in Madrid in a joint exhibition together with JORGE GALINDO.

Since his last exhibition in the Soledad Lorenzo Gallery 2009, JORGE GALINDO has exhibited in individual shows such as MUSAC. Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, El Museo de Bellas Artes in Santander, and in the exhibition Ficciones y Realidades, in El Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid as well as in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow.

In a course given by JULIAN SCHNABEL held in the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid JORGE GALINDO had the chance to know in JULIAN SCHNABEL person. Since that moment they have both continued their professional relationship as well as their friendship which, in this case, can be translated in a joint collaborative exhibition in the Soledad Lorenzo gallery. Both creators share an iconography and cultural heritage which is presented here together for the first time.

Schnabel will be presenting three large-scale works, done in oil on polyester. These are in fact three photographs imprinted on canvas that show oriental style architectures which he has taken part in with colourful pictorial abstractions in a gestural way. That same “gesture” is repeated throughout his six medium sized polaroids: abstract photographs or photos with an erratic character that contain brushstrokes or stains traced in purple ink on the surface. His work in this exhibition is completed with four maps which he also applied paint to.

Jorge Galindo, in line with his pictorial style, will be presenting large scale works with images juxtaposed in the form of collages. The predominant subject matter in this case, is the female body and its decontextualised image. Another one of his works that will be on show is made up with the front covers of well-known vinyl records which the artist has used to work with, this piece is exhibited in the form of an installation created by a set of images.

JULIAN SCHNABEL, (1951) His work is included, amongst others, in the following public collections: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art; The Whitney Museum of American Art; The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA); Guggenheim; Reina Sofia and The Georges Pompidou Centre.
