PSM is pleased to present the long-term-performance program ENDLESS BEGINNING. From April 29th through May 29th, the three artists Morgan Belenguer, Anca Munteanu Rimnic, and Ariel Reichman will simultaneously, and continuously, perform in the space throughout the gallery’s regular hours of operation. While conforming to the time-rhythm of a traditional exhibition, the juxtaposition of three distinct performances examines questions concerning temporal extensibility of performance art, creating a multilayered installation consisting of human action and substance.

The choreographer Morgan Belenguer investigates the concept of time considering both its horizontal and vertical elements. His two-layered documentation develops a kind of ‚contact-improvisation’ over the month’s time of the performance, consisting of two axes like a mathematical graph. Unlike classical contact-improvisation, no other dancers exist to give rise to succeeding movements; instead photographs are used from the prior day’s dance, and placed on the floor and walls depicting those traces - horizontal depictions. In a second corollary work, digital photographs are taken at ten minute intervals by a computer-controlled camera and continually stacked atop of each other, creating a geological site for future investigations – vertical depictions.

In her performance Sisyphus, Anca Munteau Rimnic reflects on the senseless passage of time. Based on the Greek myth in which Sisyphus, King of Corinth, was condemned to roll a huge boulder up a hill, only to have it roll back down repeatedly through eternity, Munteanu Rimnic criticizes social expectations of productivity and efficiency.

Ariel Reichman performs a daily ritual of his childhood. By slipping into a very alien, yet familiar role, he examines both past and present feelings. His continuous repetition of his small play traces the customs of the past, once perceived through the trusting naivety of childhood, now colliding with the critical eye of adulthood. The performance is accompanied by a sound-piece critically engaging the temporal nature of the play as well as the theatrical phenomenon of applause.
