Max Beckmann (1884–1950) was one of the most productive and virtuosic of all 20th c. graphic artists. During the 1910s and 20s, he created numerous individual prints and series dealing with contemporary issues. In 1917, Beckmann stated that the artist must be “a child of his own time. Naturalism against the own ego. Objectivity with regards to inner faces.” Black-and-white graphic art lends itself to such ends. Clear lines, clear relations. Prints not only facilitate a wider distribution, but printing plates, ink, and paper are also much cheaper than oil, canvas, and stretchers. This factor is not to be underestimated, especially just after World War I.

The Museum Ludwig will show most of its works on paper by Max Beckmann. For this pur-pose, mould stains were removed from the prints, and the paper was flattened in order to enable the viewers to take a fresh look at the works.
