WHOLE, IN PART. ARTISTS" PUBLICATIONS IN THE MACBA COLLECTIONS
Showcase Project
22 June 2013 - 12 January 2014

Curatorship and coordination: Araceli Corbo (MUSAC), Maite Muñoz (MACBA)

It seems impossible to interpret the history of contemporary art, especially from the second half of the 20th Century, without taking into account the relevance of documentary heritage in a wide sense. The history of contemporary art cannot be written only from the experience of the works themselves. It is with this spirit that the MACBA Center for Studies and Documentation has surged at the end of 2007, with the mission of conserving, promulgating and making available for research, resources such as books, magazines and audiovisual material as well as personal archives, artists" publications and different kinds of original documentary material or productions in series, accessible through the Library or Archive.

This exhibit offers a reading of recent history and the topicality of artists" publications conserved in this archive. These are publications whose authors work individually or collectively and who conceive books as a way of plastic expression, as works of art, often edited in series. The exhibit includes everything from artists" books to diverse publications, making room for all those documents that are mainly printed, that go beyond these formats to include posters, ephemeral material, periodic publications or multiples.
