OUT OF RANGE
An Overview of Independent Publishing in the Iberian Peninsula
18 April - 13 September 2015
Curatorship: Ginés Martínez
Coordination: Helena López Camacho
Out of Range: An Overview of Independent Publishing in the Iberian Peninsula is an exhibition curated by Ginés Martínez for MUSAC’s Showcase Project. The idea behind ‘Out of Range’ is to provide an overview of the independent publishing fairs held in the Iberian Peninsula. The exhibition—which will remain open to the public from 18 April to 6 September—is divided into three sections: first of all, ‘Map’ and ‘Archive’ afford two different starting points with compilations of publications, information and graphic materials from around thirty publishing fairs (Ladyfest, Tenderete, Feira Morta, Gutter Fest, FLIA, and Libros Mutantes, among others); while the third section, ‘Workshop’ hosts a number of activities including presentations, workshops, lectures, whose purpose is to develop and put into practice the contents on view in the exhibition.
This exhibition for the Showcase Project wishes to explore the context of publications that do not follow the conventional guidelines for publishing and which are distributed outside the usual circuit of bookstores, newsagents and libraries, as well other non-printed materials currently being distributed on websites, blogs or peer-to-peer networks whose contents are conditioned by the medium they operate in.
Independent publishing fairs can be viewed as a paradoxical symptom of the changes taking place in traditional models of publishing, diffusion, and reading. The fairs fit into the complex processes of transformation of contemporary culture as residual spaces or zones of resistance (depending on individual cases) and their growth over recent years is a phenomenon worth examining. The abundance of printed material featured at these fairs contrasts sharply with the sparse and placid public visiting them, which represents a tiny portion of the publishing market. This striking asymmetry surely indicates that the roots of this situation are social and ideological issues unconnected with the publishing business.
On Map
Map has been conceived by the industrial designer and illustrator Olaf Ladousse and the illustrator Martín López. It depicts graphically in the Showcase Project the sum of events and initiatives related to independent publishing in the Iberian Peninsula; it proposes hypothetical links that could favour new possibilities for cooperation and expand the scope of this public space.
Map features the following initiatives, agents and creators: publishing events in Spain, like Au Ou, Autoban, No tengo Mamá, Graf, Gutter Fest, Flia, Tenderete, Jam Plegat, Velienteinverso, Autoplacer, Pliegue, Nosotros feriantes, Autoedita o muere, Hul; and also publishing events in Portugal, like Feira Morta; as well as the collectives Chili Com Carne, La Fanzinoteca, Fanzineología, Indisciplinadas, Raum Press, Vendedores de humo, Sandwich mixto.
On Archive
One of the major goals of the project is to create an archive of publications. The intention is to study the materials circulating on the periphery of the publishing industry. The archive will be installed in a mobile module imitating Fanzinoteca Ambulante, the project for an archive of fanzines and hand-made books, and will be freely accessible for the duration of the exhibition. Next to the module will be a duplicator, offering the possibility of copying documents in the archive.
On Workshop
The purpose of Workshop is to examine in greater depth the materials on display in the exhibition as a whole, through presentations, workshops, debates, actions and online events. ‘Workshop’ will turn the exhibition space into a production laboratory and become an organic space that changes its form to adapt to the needs of each specific moment; a space where the traces of all the activities will be visible and where the materials they generate will remain.
Workshop’s activities will start on 19 April with a guided tour of the exhibition by Ginés Martínez, curator of the project, followed by a presentation of the publishing project Cuadernos domésticos by the Indisciplinadas collective, followed in turn by a concert by LCDD, Los Caballos De Düsseldorf, a collective that manufactures its own instruments through recycling and manipulating electronic circuits from toys.
Slow Research Bureau has programmed four days of debates to be held from 5 to 8 May. The goal is to develop some of the issues of the self-publishing world brought up in the exhibition. All the sessions, with the exception of the second one, will take place in videoconference format, will be open and free, and broadcast live on the museum’s website www.musac.es. The session on 5 May will consist of a dialogue between various publishing events, such as Feria Morta, Ladyfest and Esta. On 6 May a number of creators and publishers from León including Rafael Saravia (Club Leteo), Alejandro Diez Garín (Chelsea), Adrián Javier de Castro (Oiga mire) and Santos Perandones (Meando contar el viento), will discuss their projects, share their experiences and examine the specific case of self-publishing in a city like León. The debates on 7 May will explore the evolution of archives in the P2P period, with the participation of Fanzinoteca, Julian Cruz, Secret Knots, and Silvia Nanclares Bookcamping. On 8 May, the discussion will focus on the new “business models” for publishing and on copyright issues, with the participation of Tenderete, Chili Com Carne/Traficantes de sueños and Nerea Sanjuan.
Tagging Day a workshop led by Fanzinoteca on 8 May, will take a look at the nature of the various publications, inviting participants to classify the holdings of the Archive.
The workshop Fig.1, led by the designer Marco Balesteros, is scheduled for 9 and 10 May, and will take the form of an interdisciplinary inquiry into adaptation systems, the emerging behaviours of many systems, the complexities of operating in networks, chaos theory, the functioning of unbalanced systems and their self-organising capacity. Taking these fields of research as a starting point, the workshop will develop concepts such as free association, performance, and lists/taxonomies.
The activities of Workshop will come to a close on 9 May, with the Autoedita o muere [Self-publish or Die] Barter Party, an initiative inviting people to barter as a non-commercial form of exchanging self-published material, fostering dialogue among small publishers, self-publishing initiatives, etc. The event will include a concert by the music and design hybrid project Positif, who will present their sound inspired by videogame electronics and industrial design.
