WORKS PEEKED AT AND PICKED OUT BY JEAN-JACQUES LEBEL
29 June - 26 July 2012

Man is a creature of habit. He finds comfort in the repetition of the same, knowing what to expect, most of all no rude surprises. Nevertheless, there are recurrences that one is happy to relinquish, in Berlin it is the rainy summer and the seemingly never-ending icy winter. On the other hand, a very welcome annual event is the return of Berlin-Paris, a project of the French embassy, which takes place for the fourth time this year and which we organised in collaboration with our partner, Galerie 1900-2000, from the very beginning on. For us Berlin-Paris is always a pleasant diversion, it allows room for new ideas and intensive time with friends.
In the last couple of years it has been a priority for David Fleiss and myself to showcase the
programme of both galleries in group shows as well as in solo shows. This time we hand over the duty of selecting the art works to two artists, who have been shaping the image of our galleries for a long time. Jean-Jacques Lebel, French artist, art theorist and political activist will direct the presentation in Berlin. The torch will be passed on to Swiss artist Sylvie Fleury in Paris a week later. Both are non- conformists and do not like categorizations in the art world. Despite being from different generations, both of their works are largely influenced by the concepts of high art and low culture.

In Berlin Jean-Jacques Lebel has made a selection from both programmes of the galleries. Even the title Works peeked at and picked out sounds like a performance, as Lebel is also known to be the organiser of the first European happening in Venice in the year 1960. This is going to be a colorful show in every sense of the word, including works by Artschwager, Breton, Feldmann, Heimerdinger, Klapheck, Man Ray, Miller, Oppenheim, Picabia, Rockenschaub, Schäfer, Schwitters, Vostell and many others.
