Matthew Marks is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Vincent Fecteau, the next exhibition in his gallery at 523 West 24th Street. This will be Fecteau’s first solo exhibition in New York in five years.
The six sculptures and eight collages in the exhibition comprise the artist’s complete work from the past two years. In his new sculptures, which are wall-mounted reliefs, Fecteau punctures the plane of the wall for the first time, creating a sense of depth and adding a new element of spatial complexity to his work. The abstract sculptures are modeled and carved in epoxy resin and then painted. Fecteau uses a process of adding and subtracting to develop his forms. “I start with a particular gesture, or thought, or idea, and then change it over and over again until I find a place where it surprises me, where it doesn’t quite rest,” the artist recently commented about his work. “I feel like I’m always trying to figure out the same thing but each time I approach it from a slightly different direction. I can’t define what that thing is. It’s a feeling or a sound or a song. Maybe it’s a kind of mood.”
The small three-dimensional collages in the exhibition are made from found objects and photographs taken by Fecteau and others that the artist has collected over the last 20 years. The collages lie flat to the wall and often incorporate cropped images of architectural and interior spaces overlaid with abstract photographs.
Vincent Fecteau (b. 1969) lives and works in San Francisco. His work appeared in the 2002 and 2012 Whitney Biennials, and has been the subject of one-person exhibitions at the Berkeley Museum of Art (2002), the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven (2004), the Art Institute of Chicago (2008), and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2009). Most recently ten sculptures made over the past six years by Fecteau were included in the 2013 Carnegie International.
