Shade Paintings
26 April – 7 June 2014

„For many years I had thought of the japanese use of black added to a color, having perhaps a mistaken notion of that color system. In western color thinking "tint" means the addition of white to a color making it into a pastel. Black is less often used, I believe, but it, mixed into any color, means creating a "shade."

Thinking still of color charts or the spectrum of color from a prism I chose a set of six, the primary and secondary colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.
On this set of six I applied the noted colors, then for the final coat added a tiny bit of black. I was surprised at how this small intervention in the color changed it subtly but strongly. I did the same with another set of more ambiguous colors, the neutral tint, indian yellow-green, quinacridone magenta and davy's gray, and so on with other groups as well as with single works.

In this way the "Shade Paintings" follow up on the "Pastel Paintings" or "Scumble" of a few years ago, and come in a more basic way from my interest in color systems, using them in my work since 1972.
