LIGHTING OUT FOR THE TERRITORIES
16 May - 25 June 2012

“...You’ve been on this road before / You can read the signs / You can feel your way / You can do this in your sleep” Laurie Anderson Lighting Out For The Territories

The younger generation of artists in Croatia (or the South Slavic countries in general) are equally lighting out for new territories, after they have shaken off both the long shadows of the belligerent and violent past of former Yugoslavia and the far too euphoric hopes of fundamental sociopolitical improvements. For though military peace has long since been established, new – purely profit-oriented – elites and powers are in control after neoliberalism has struck in the meantime.

For the exhibition Leila Topić selected ten artistic positions that examine the validity of “stable values,” explore what “reality” might actually be, and focus on the changing images of Croatia as seen from inside and from abroad. Their view simultaneously focuses on sharpening perception and countering the superficiality and hectic pace of the widely rampant economy-centered ways of acting and thinking with depth and slowness.

Participating artists Rene Bachrach Krištofić, Sandro Djukić, Igor Grubić, Igor Kuduz, Damir Očko, Renata Poljak, Viktor Popović, Jasenko Rasol, Vlasta Žanićć and Slaven Tolj.
