Secundino Hernández, born 1975 in Madrid, lives and works in Madrid and Berlin. Following 2007 (Krinzinger Projekte, Artist in Residenc) and 2010 (Indeginismo), Four Seasons: Between Winter and Spring is already the third one-man show at the Galerie Krinzinger. Since his residency in Vienna, Secundino Hernández has developed his own formal idiom. His career has really taken off and he now works with some of Europeʼs most renowned galleries (Heinrich Erhardt, Bärbel Grässlin, Victoria Miro, among others). His works have also been on view in relevant group exhibitions in institutions and museums all over the world.
“For Vienna I wanted to do something crazy, like go back and paint the four seasons,” as Hernández put it. Art historical quotes and references assume a special role in his painting. While his earlier painting were under the sway of his interest in German role models such as Martin Kippenberger and Albert Oehlen, in recent years he has shown a strong return to his origins in the Spanish tradition of painting – from Goya and Velazquez, Picasso all the way to the Spanish art of the 1950s and 1960s. Most recently, he has also engaged intensively with El Greco’s work.
He has compared his painting to making photocopies of copies, a process perpetuated so long until the result no longer has anything in common with the initial material. His seemingly randomly drawn delicate lines, hatchings or exploding dabs of paint prove to be precisely arranged compositions with preliminary drawings, corrections or even overpaintings so that the process in which these works emerged is visible. A concern of his painting work is to break with the compulsion of having to pursue a formal idea.
