MONIKA BAER
04 September – 13 November 2016

Monika Baer (*1964 in Freiburg/Breisgau) belongs to the first generation of female German artists who have achieved to establish a reputation as artist among the male-dominated realm of the Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie. In her works Baer often refers to theatre and film by staging the projection screen or stage as a part of the composition itself. She examines the boundaries and limits of painting and ventures beyond them by turning the projection screen or the stage into an object itself. Monika Baer disassembles the canvas to assemble its components, for instance the frame, into a pictorial composition further adding real objects such as bottles at times. The use of exaggeration and kitsch is a significant aspect of Baer’s artistic practice and the artist plays with the notions of theatricality and parody in her works. The kestnergesellschaft will present Baer’s most recent work series dating from 2013 to 2015 in which she deals with the subject of the broken painter in large-format still life paintings. The solo show will be complemented with a selection of the artist’s earlier work.
