"PATHS OF THE MEMORY"
For its first collaboration with the great Italian photographer Mimmo Jodice, the Karsten Greve Gallery is pleased to present, within the context of the month of photography, an important exhibition entitled “Paths of the Memory” (Les parcours de la mémoire). This exhibition takes us on a journey to the roots of our ancient civilisation, to the origins even of myth. The works of Mimmo Jodice include locations in Italy, France, Spain and Greece in an intimate and moving interpretation that draws the eye into a distant past, to classicism and beyond.
Jodice brings archaeological fragments, antique skies, faces and bodies living in the reality of marble and mosaic to life and makes them vibrate. At the same time, landscapes full of the mysterious lights of the Mediterranean appear as though lost in a timeless abstraction. Today the Mediterranean, the oldest of seas, the primitive womb, the cradle of culture, is a varied, contradictory entity that is laden with symbols that are difficult to decipher and understand, but Jodice’s profound research also constitutes a delicate, silent and poetic warning that reflects upon the present, seeking the identity and complexity of Europe in the South.
The unity of language that is Mimmo Jodice’s own, creates equilibrium of great delicacy. Playing with the boundaries separating the reality of his representation, he captures the most profound identities of places and objects with an implication that is not just aesthetic and cultural, but more especially, emotional. His landscapes, suspended in time, are marked by their resounding lightness, by their movement intimated by a slight blur, by a visual buzzing that gives volume and substance to the imperceptible ordinary.
Mimmo Jodice was born in Naples in 1934. An active photographer since the 1970’s, he has also taught photography at the Naples Academy. His work having become a beacon for contemporary Italian photography, it has been widely exposed through countless exhibitions and international publications.
