Halle für Kunst is pleased to announce “Hermes und der Pfau presenting Ruairiadh O’Connell: “Retina Burns”.”

Hermes und der Pfau, the Stuttgart-based project space, delivers insight into its practice by further developing its exhibition programme of the past three years with a solo show of the British artist Ruairiadh O'Connell accompanied by documentation material from the Hermes und der Pfau project.

The decision to show Ruairiadh O’Connell mirrors Hermes und der Pfau’s focus on minimalistic and conceptual positions. The six presented works by O’Connell, painting-like silk-screen prints on large-scale aluminium sheets, are based on found photographs of black silk stockings. Through isolating and expanding certain areas of these images, O’Connell creates abstract markings, emblematizing the idea of the burnt retina, of captured moments of joy.

Ruairiadh O’Connell was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1983. He received his BA in Fine Arts from Oxford Brookes University and currently lives in Frankfurt / Main, Germany where he is studying in the class of Judith Hopf at Staedel School. Recent exhibitions include Fondation Gutzwiller, Zurich, “Morror” with Michael Krebber and Michaela Eichwald at International Project Space, Birmingham (2010) and Project-Display at Frankfurter Kunstverein (2009). Works by the artist are on show until 20.02.2011 at “Cold Society“, a group show within the exhibition series KW69 at Kunst-Werke, Berlin
