WILFREDO PRIETO
Equilibrando La Curva
Curated by Andrea Lissoni
22 June – 2 September 2012

Wilfredo Prieto (1978, Sancti Spíritus, Cuba) creates disorienting installations with immense visual immediacy, tackling themes such as politics, the economy and the environment. The artist is often inspired by Cuban society, with which he has maintained a critical but intense relationship, but his work opens up to sweeping reflections on the globalized society and its production of goods, symbols and values.

As the starting point for his works, Prieto takes ordinary objects from everyday life, without making a hierarchical distinction between industrial products, poor materials, valuables or consumer goods. Prieto chooses materials and objects based on the economic, social and cultural meanings they engender, and he alters their characteristics and uses, generating short-circuits of meaning that surprise the spectator and beckon one to reflect.

With the Equilibrando la curva exhibition, Prieto speaks of the infinite possibilities of art, but also of its aim to teach us how to look at the world from an ever-new perspective. Through this encounter with objects and materials that differ enormously in scale and nature, the spectator embarks on a path that questions one’s perceptual habits and the associations linking object, function and meaning that we instinctively tend to make.
