The Waste Land
January 12 - February 17, 2007

It is a great pleasure to announce the opening of the fifth solo exhibition of the Norwegian artist Vibeke Tandberg at c/o – Atle Gerhardsen.

First published in 1922, The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot marks for many the starting point of modernism in literary history. The poem deals with disorder and chaos, reflecting European society in the wake of World War I. It is well-known for its extensive pages of endnotes and references, spanning from Buddhism to Wagner. It is written as a collage, merging different stories without any immediately apparent link or coherent narrative to bind them.

The notion and technique of collage is present in Vibeke Tandberg’s digitally processed photographic works. In her new work, the scissors are no longer confined to a procedure on the computer; rather they have been included in the material artistic production - as a tool.

During her fifth solo exhibition at c/o – Atle Gerhardsen, Vibeke Tandberg will be showing The Waste Land, consisting of 36 collages of varying size. For this series Tandberg chose an edition of T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, cut out each of the words, and then organized them alphabetically and in groups: at once it became clear how often each word was used throughout the poem. The separated words from The Waste Land have all been meticulously glued to a paper background. Next to each word the artist notes a number, referring to its place and the order in the poem.

T.S. Eliot’s poem is constructed as a collage of textual building blocks, in which meaning and order seem to break down. As Vibeke Tandberg disjoints The Waste Land, she radically intervenes in the meaning and message of the text – the text as a coherent whole disintegrates. And yet at the same time, the artist finds a system which in the end liberates The Waste Land from chaos and decline, returning it to a state of visual order and structure.

Vibeke Tandberg, born in Oslo in 1967, studied at the College of Fine Arts in Bergen and at the School of Photography and Film at Göteburg University. Her work has been included in numerous international exhibitions. Besides her exhibition at c/o – Atle Gerhardsen, in January 2007 Vibeke Tandberg will also be opening a solo exhibition in the “Lillehammer Art Museum”, which will then go on display in the “Haugar Vestfold Art Museum” in Tønsberg in April.
