DOMINIQUE GONZALEZ-FOERSTER
Return To Noreturn
21 April - 19 May 2012

Esther Schipper is pleased to present "Return to Noreturn", the first exhibition by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster at the new gallery space.

"Six months after returning from the Land of Oz, Dorothy has become a melancholic child who cannot sleep, as she is obsessed with her memories of Oz."

Like Dorothy going back to the land of Oz in Walter Murch's film, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster has decided to return to "Noreturn" (2009) and decompose the film which was shot in the TH.2058 exhibition at Tate Modern. There, with a comprehensive installation in the main Turbine Hall, Gonzalez-Foerster presented a narration of a shelter where humans and sculptures find protection from endless rains.

Some elements that appear in the film are presented in conventional exhibition formats such as painting, sculpture, text, sound and video. The exhibition space is again transformed into a utopian environment in a future point in time. In one of the gallery rooms the film "Noreturn" will depict how this utopian environment is inhabited and used. It can be seen as a departure and a conclusion.

Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, born 1965 in Strasbourg, recently presented several stage plays / performances in collaboration with composer Ari Benjamin-Meyers in Berlin and Brussels (2011); for PERFORMA 09 and the Guggenheim New York (2008). Among her solo exhibitions are projects for Dia Art Foundation, New York (2009); The Turbine Hall, Tate Modern, London (2008); and MUSAC Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y Léon (2008). She participated in the 53rd International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia (2009), Skulptur Projekte Münster (2007) and Documenta XI, Kassel (2002) and is represented with a site-specific project in Inhotim, Brazil since 2010. Gonzalez-Foerster lives and works in Paris and Rio de Janeiro.

A new performance will be shown at Tensta Konsthall in cooperation with the University of Dance and Circus on May 27, 2012. The performance is based on Francois Truffaut’s film Fahrenheit 451.
