Distrito 4 Contemporary Art Gallery presents the third gallery show of Atelier Van Lieshout , a collective group based in the Port of Rotterdam and leaded by Joep Van Lieshout founder in 1985. AVL operates internationally in various areas such as Contemporary art, design and architecture, producing works that examine and critique the commercial nature of the society we live in.
In this exhibition AVL presents 10 works from the new series Tribe, it takes the name after one of the pieces of the show, an enormous sculpture of foam and fiberglass of the year 2011. In this show, the artists highlights recurrent social themes like the work organization, the power structure and revolution, all these themes mix with autarchy between each other, proposing a new tribal social organization.

Through these sculptures AVL offers the viewer the opportunity to go beyond the boundaries of the established material limits, the sculptures are now carved and laid bare to enhance the deep relationship between inside and outside.

At the same time they reflect upon our extremely advanced and complex society in which over-consumption and limited raw materials play a crucial role. These changes will see an emergence of various new cultures in the near future. Once supplies are exhausted society will see a harshening of relations between people and increased survival instinct which raises the question whether such radical changes, which are coupled with violence but which may also lead to a new improved society, are good or bad. A New Tribal organization will occur were groups of people start organizing themselves in tribes instead of countries and nationalities.

Van Lieshout ́s works have been exhibited PS1 and MOMA; Nueva York, Stichting Museum, Rotterdam, en Stedeljik Museum, Amsterdam, en Kunstverein, Düsseldorf, en MACBA, Barcelona, Centro per le Arti Contemporanee Luigi Pecci, Prato and other institutions and Museums private and public around the world. In the year 2001 the artist created AVL-Ville, a type of city-country in the Port of Rotterdam where his ideals interact and come together. In the last years AVL has been part of numerous and important exhibitions: La Biennale de Venecia (2003), Sprengel Museum, Hannover (2004), Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Vienna (2005), Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo (2005), Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2005, 2008), Central del Arte, Guadalajara Mexico (2006), Shangai Biennal, Shangai (2006), 10ma Mostra Internazionale di Architettura, Venice (2006), MACRO, Rome (2007), Museum Folkwang, Essen (2008), Onderzeebotenloods/ Museum Boijmans, Rotterdam (2010), Musée National d'Art Moderne Centre Pompidou, Paris (2011).
