Gabriel Orozco s’est imposé dès le début des années 1990 comme l’un des artistes les plus importants de sa génération. En constant déplacement, sans atelier fixe, il rejette les identifications nationales ou régionales, et puise son inspiration dans les différents lieux où il vit et voyage. Son travail se caractérise par un vif intérêt pour les éléments du paysage urbain et du corps humain. Les incidents du quotidien et du familier, dont la poésie est celle du hasard et du paradoxe, nourrissent son travail. Les frontières entre l’objet d’art et l’environnement quotidien sont délibérément brouillées, art et réalité volontairement mélangés. Le mouvement, l’expansion, la circularité, l’articulation entre géométrique et organique, sont des constantes qui animent sa recherche plastique depuis plus de vingt ans.
Le Deutsche Guggenheim de Berlin présente actuellement une exposition personnelle de Gabriel Orozco (Asterisms, du 6 juillet au 21 octobre 2012). En 2010-2011, son travail a fait l’objet d’une rétrospective itinérante au MOMA (New York), au Kunstmuseum (Bâle), au Centre Pompidou (Paris) et à la Tate Modern (Londres).
Gabriel Orozco has been a renown figure of the international art scene since the early 1990s. An artist in constant movement, with no fixed studio space, he draws his inspiration from the sites he passes through and rejects the idea of national or regional identity. Born in 1962 in Jalapa, Mexico, he currently lives between New York, Mexico and Paris.
His endlessly evolving art produces pieces of varying scale in a diverse range of mediums. Photographs of his interventions in public spaces, fired clay sculptures, drawings, collages, reconfigured objects and paintings all figure his universe filled with elements from the urban landscape and human body. Incidents from daily life are central to his work which plays upon a poetry of chance and paradox. Boundaries between the art object and the everyday world are deliberately blurred, art is mingled with reality. Movement, expansion, circularity and the articulation between geometric and organic forms have been constant themes in his artwork for the past twenty years.
The Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin is currently presenting a solo exhibition of Gabriel Orozco (Asterisms, July 6 to October 21, 2012). In 2010-2011, his work was the subject of a traveling retrospective at MOMA (New York), the Kunstmuseum (Basel), the Centre Pompidou (Paris) and the Tate Modern (London).
