Necklace of Fake Teeth

French artist Mathilde Rosier (b.1973) creates atmospheric environments which draw on her interest in the physical and psychological experience of ancient rites and rituals. For her first solo exhibition in the UK, she will transform Gallery 3 into a series of rooms, bringing together paintings, sculptural assemblages and film. This specially constructed environment evokes the journey between conscious and unconscious realms, with the motif of the bed representing a threshold to buried psychic states. The installation was influenced by Sigmund Freud, Jean Rouch’s 1955 film Les Maîtres Fous, and Howard Carter’s excavation of Tutankhamen’s tomb. On the opening night of the exhibition, there will be a performance by Rosier, in which participants will be invited to wear masks and become part of a mysterious ritual ceremony. These masks will then be included in the exhibition.
