A wide-ranging solo exhibition at Badischer Kunstverein will showcase works by artists Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz. The exhibition is focused on their new film installation "To Valerie Solanas and Marilyn Monroe in Recognition of Their Desperation" (2013), which is premiering in Karlsruhe.
In the work of Pauline Boudry/Renate Lorenz, materials from the past are revealed that display non-represented or non-readable moments of alternative approaches to life and sexuality deviating from the norm. The artists use a method in their films and installations that they call "queer archaeology," with its point of origin resting in historical photographs, films, texts, or songs. These materials are restaged with pop-cultural references, live performance in front of the camera, independent camera work, light and anachronistic objects. This fosters suspense between visualization as self-empowerment and glamour and visualization as instruments of pathologization and criminalization.
In "To Valerie Solanas and Marilyn Monroe in Recognition of Their Desperation," Boudry and Lorenz are joined by the six musicians Rachel Aggs, Peaches, Ginger Brooks Takahashi, Catriona Shaw, Verity Susman and William Wheeler in exploring the possibilities and limitations presented by a politics of the musical and filmic form and in investigating the shifting potential of sound, rhythm, and light. This experimental film project refers to a musical score created by the avant-garde composer Pauline Oliveros in 1970 – a score that is designed to eschew hierarchies among musicians while simultaneously fostering individuality. It took form – so the story goes – after a reading of the radical feminist "SCUM Manifesto" by Valerie Solanas.
Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz have been working together since 1998 and live in Berlin.
