POP CLASSICS

May 29 - September 5, 2004

The first major exhibition in the new ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum’s 1,000 plus square metre Special Exhibitions Gallery POP CLASSICS shows major works representative of American Pop Art. The exhibition comprised almost 50 items and includes works by all the prime exponents of the movement. Apart from leading lights such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, visitors was offered the chance to see notable works by Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Tom Wesselmann, James Rosenquist, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Indiana, Jim Dine and Edward Kienholz, to name but a few. POP CLASSICS comprises works from 1956 to 1975 with the emphasis on Pop Art’s heyday in the 1960s, and includes paintings, combines, graphic prints, sculptures and installations. This last category sports such large-scale installations as Robert Rauschenberg’s Soundings, James Rosenquist’s Horse Blinders and Edward Kienholz’s The Portable War Memorial, none of which has been shown for many years.
