THE VALUE OF FREEDOM
19 September 2018 – 10 February 2019

Curated by Severin Dünser.

The group exhibition with Austrian and international artists negotiates the scope of action between individual self-determination and social responsibility.

In Western Europe, we grow up with the freedom to choose who we want to be and how we want to live. Often taken for granted, this possibility for self-realization makes one forget that freedom is a precious commodity, and also bound to responsibility. Individual self-determination can only exist if there is a social consensus around it, which must also be developed. As a society, should we limit the individual in defence of freedom? Where does the self-determination of the individual end and the responsibility for others and society begin? Conceived as a group exhibition, The Value of Freedom tries to come to terms with these and other related questions. It strives to foster awareness of the significance of freedom, but also of the necessity for individuals’ freedom to be weighed against the interests of the common good on both a personal and everyday level, as well as the need to take on social responsibility.
