Formations of Classical Modernism
11 February - 29 May, 2011

A collection is always a fragment. In 2007, MUMOK began to complement its own holdings from the first half of the twentieth century in an exhibition entitled Laboratory Modernism: Fine Art, Photography, and Film in Transition, adding works from related areas of film, architecture, photography.

To continue this, in the spring of 2011 a new multi-genre exhibition will emerge that will focus especially on abstract images and formal interventions. In the course of this presentation, developments of the first half of the century will be discussed that did not take place in those countries known later as the 'West,' and that at the time of the collection’s emergence played a subordinate role in the public awareness. While the physical rearrangement of the collection primarily seeks to establish a vital correspondence between the holdings and linked collections located nearby, the engagement with a perspective on cultural production from the first half of the twentieth century that is not purely Western became a central component of a collaboration with the art and cultural studies program at Vienna’s Akademie der bildenden Künste.

Against the backdrop of the specific character MUMOK’s collection of classical modernism, its new presentation will be divided into several thematic sections: Planned are thematic emphases including realms of figures, portraits, stage and abstract space, notation and the alphabet. Furthermore, specially created display cases will present abstract developments in art from the first half of the twentieth century, showing key journals and publications.
