WALTER SMETAK
Smetak's Inventions
17 March – 9 April 2017

Curated by Julia Gerlach (DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program)
Adviser: Marco Scarassatti (UFMG, Belo Horizonte)

This exhibition reflects Walter Smetak’s multi-faceted oeuvre. It presents a selection of the elaborate “Plásticas Sonoras”, some of the instruments Walter Smetak invented in the 1960s and 1970s, and original documents from various archives: writings, films, graphic scores, concrete poetry and photos, all giving an insight into the many layers of Smetak’s philosophy. A two-day conference will explore Walter Smetak’s thinking, his influence on contemporary music and sound art in Brazil as well as thresholds of reception in Europe.

A project by DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program and Ensemble Modern in cooperation with Goethe-Institute. Funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation and supported by Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung, Pro Helvetia, Swiss Arts Council, Federal Foreign Service and the Society of Friends of Ensemble Modern e.V.
